Cherry Blossoms and Fifty Thousand Miles

I went to see the cherry blossoms in Washington DC yesterday. It was a perfect day for it! The flowers were just fully opened, it wasn’t too crowded, and it was kind of a cool day. Awesome! The tidal basin is edged by a sidewalk which is surrounded by cherry trees. They looked like something from Dr. Seuss.
They are amazing I would say; I could have looked at them all day.

I tried a few senior picture poses. I like this one the best.
It's so artsy!

There were many low-flying helicopters that said “United States of America” on them. I wondered which politicians were wasting taxpayer money flying around in them. There were also lots of secret service men around. I wondered about them too, until I saw Newt Gingrich. Unfortunately, I didn’t get my camera out quickly enough. You’ll have to take my word that I saw him. Maybe it’s in the news or something. He was at the MLKjr monument.

On my way home, my truck’s odometer turned over to 50,000 miles. Woo hoo! As I like to do, I took a picture of the odometer:
Look! I'm going the speed limit!

…and a picture of the road right as it happened:
I was on 495.

Ahhhh…. truly lovely! I’m glad it was a beautiful day – you seem to deserve one of those.

So, how far away from Newt were you? As close as the duck in the pond? Twice as far? Was the duck a Secret Service Duck?

    • Brad

Newt was about as close as the duck, but there were a heck of a lot of people around him. Plus all the secret service ducks agents. I saw the crowd of people, but didn’t think anything of it. By the time I saw Newt, he was just turning around to walk away.

Thanks for that image. I now see in my mind’s eye nothing but those Oriental Trading Company rubber duckies wearing dark sunglasses, with curly-chord ear pieces and black suits. AARRRGGHHH!

Can you believe I’ve never gone to Washington to see the Cherry Blossoms?
If they were at full bloom yesterday, that means by this weekend they’ll be kaput, right?

Maybe you ought to start wearing your camera around your neck…..this is the 2nd famous person shot you’ve missed. Btw: When did you become the famous person magnet?

    • Brad

If the weather stays cool, the flowers will last two more weeks. I’m almost positive they’ll still be around next weekend. I had a camera in my hand when Newt was so close by, but by the time I saw him, he turned around, then was swallowed by the crowd. I didn’t chase after him because I’m not much of a fan, and because I didn’t want the secret service to think I was going to attack him or something. Now if it was Ron Paul, I would have pressed through the crowd and insisted on a picture with him.

….and don’t forget if you run into Ron, invite him to my house for dinner.

        • Carol

          …as in Reagan? Uh, Hon, I think he’s passed… ;-/

          • Lloyd

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Ronald referred to as Ron or Ron referred to as Ronald.
