Curiosity Appeased

I find myself wondering about places I drive past regularly. The giant church that looks like a space ship on the top of the hill next to school – what is that place like? That small comic book store on Belair Road that looks bombed out and closed – is it really open, and do they have action figures? That old restaurant behind Home Depot that I pass by on my way home – do people actually go there and is the food good?

I finally answered one of those questions yesterday. I went to the restaurant. To celebrate my return to solid foods, I was going to join Peggy for a bite to eat before handbells. She said there was this place that had good open-face hot turkey sandwiches. When she told me it was called Valley View Inn, I couldn’t believe it! That was the name of the restaurant behind Home Depot!

Peggy told the story of how she used to work at a bank nearby and she and her co-workers would eat at Valley View Inn. She said it was always full of old people. She returns every once in a while, and she thinks it may be the exact same people because all this time has passed and she’s still one of the youngest customers.

The food choices were all diner-like American-style food. The special of the day was meatloaf. I went with the hot turkey sandwich. It was delicious. And the prices were really low. I went to pay my share of the bill and almost accidentally paid for the whole thing.

So the verdict? I like this place. It’s comfortable, the servers are friendly, and the prices are low. You should go there some time.

It's a house. It's a restaurant. It's both!

What a cool building! So, how house-like was it inside? Do people live there? Did you eat in the dining room or have they gutted the first floor to make a big space?

I am so proud of you for going because that house/restaurant place is like a small boutique shop to me – too personal for me to explore. I don’t like walking by the farmer’s market booths because it feels like a personal snub to each vendor if I don’t buy something. Along those lines, was it crowded inside?

It was not house-like at all inside. It was very restaurant-ish. The chairs and tables reminded me of the 80’s. We were eating early because handbells start at 6:30. It wasn’t crowded, but there were plenty of people. Peggy said this one little old man is in there every time she comes. He reminded me of Hans Moleman from the Simpsons.

As for the space ship atop the hill … I just this week comtemplated a trip to the top of that hill when I was early getting to school one afternoon. Maybe we can venture up there together sometime soon so we have a witness to anything weird that might happen.
I also almost ventured into the comic book store years ago when I thought I might get you a comic book for Christmas. I didn’t. Sorry.

Maybe I should take you up on that offer to visit the church together. There is safety in numbers.

I would have been the youngest if you hadn’t been there. 😉

I’m glad you liked the turkey & the wHipped potatoes. I was afraid to tell you where I get my turkey fix, because the place looks so……well, different. What are the odds that that place was somewhere you’ve wondered about. Lloyd…really, what are the odds?

Why are you saying it like that?
      Say whip.
      Now say whipped potatoes.
      Whipped potatoes.
      Whipped potatoes.
      Hehe…

Brad–Are you talking about Rock Church? I went to a play there once. The building is round, and the church part resembles Grace Church or Trinity (on Joppa Road….way down past Towson).
