A beginner Backpacking: Day Three

I brought the wrong cable to recharge my phone from the battery pack. I only have 6% left as I begin to type this. I don’t think I’ll be able to do pictures today.

Quick recap of yesterday:

We stayed at a campsite that had a bathroom. A bathroom! It was awesome.

We hiked 11 miles. It wasn’t too bad. My shoulders are getting used to the backpack, and my legs are getting used to walking, but my feet feel bruised or something. Ouch!

But Brady has it worse. His feet are one big blister. I don’t know how he’s doing it. But he says he really wants to finish.

Last night we stayed in on of the shelters that are sprinkled along the Appalachian Trail. It was nice to not set up a tent. And it was fun to talk with the three other guys who were staying there. They’re really experienced hikers. It was interesting to hear their stories.

Today is only a hike of about 7 miles. That’ll get us into Harpers Ferry by lunch and home in the afternoon. It’s been so humid, I think my favorite part of being home will be de-humidified air-conditioned air.

I’ll post some pictures tomorrow. My battery is almost out!

Youn gentlemen were heavily on my mind yesterday. The 32-yr-old son of a good friend of Thurman’s had been trying to scale a mountain in Peru this month. When he hadn’t been heard from since the 11th of the month, search parties went out looking. It was not the ending his parents would have preferred, but they were a family of faith so we know where Ben is now and rejoice with them in the certain hope of the resurrection. P.S. – glad mountain-climbing was not on this 4-day agenda….

Hooray for the last day! I hope tomorrow’s post is just one big mess of pictures!

Please tell Brady I said a prayer for his feet. As for yours, did you go to that website for your socks? Your fat pads are gone, man. As are mine and all of us that are getting older.

I am so proud of all of you!! What a huge accomplishment!

Carry on, good man. You’re almost there!

What an accomplishment indeed!! You all deserve a gold medal! A 4 day summer trip as your 1st trip is quite a feat! Speaking of feet–did you give Brady your blister bandaids? I hear they really work for the pain.

Can’t wait to see more pictures….especially of the shelter you stayed in.

TV and air-conditioning awaits you in just a few hours! Yay!

I will need to see pictures of Brady’s feet. Then pictures of a unicorn.

…and the Opening Ceremonies were no biggie this year, so you guys missed nadda…plus, I’m pretty sure you can catch them on-line now after the fact anyway, while you’re resting up on the sofa with feet elevated.

What a feather in all your caps! Plus, this should be the high point of an application for, say, the fire academy: “walked 40+/-miles in ridiculous heat with a 30-lb backpack” – they’d take you in a heart beat, I’m sure. Just in case it comes in handy to consider that…
