Top Rack Only

In my dishwasher, the top rack has been filling up very quickly. For some reason, I am reluctant to put anything but dinner plates on the bottom rack. I’ve just read so many things that say “top rack only” on them. Does that mean the bottom rack is a dangerous place for smaller dishes and for glasses? I’m not taking any chances.

Every time I unload the dishwasher, I put each thing in its place. But for some reason, I never get to see the glasses shelf be full. There is always one missing. Each time I look around the house to see if the glass is accounted for, and each time it is. Either I’ve left one in the living room, or I’ve put one in the refrigerator or something. Some day I’ll remember to check the whole house before I run the washer.

But I’m still not putting any glasses on the bottom rack.

The empty spot.

Your shelves look so neat and tidy. Have you thought about taking the door off that cabinet? 😉

I have melted many a thing by putting it on the bottom rack so close to the heating element, but I don’t know if I’ve ever put glass-glasses there.

I put glass glasses on the bottom rack. Never had a tragedy.

I have put glasses in the bottom rack before too. But only when I’m desparate & need that 1 more glass to fit. It’s usually my giant CIB mug….and those are pretty heavy & have never broken.

I put my glasses in my cabinet upside down. I just assumed everyone did that, but I’m finding out more and more that I’m the odd one.

I put my glasses upside down, also. I do it because my mom did. My mom does it because her mom did. I think it goes back to the dust bowl. They put them upside down so the glasses would stay cleaner.
However, I recently heard that you were not to put them upside down because that may cause them to chip.

Yea, I knew my mom put them in upside down to keep any dust out and that made sense so I guess that’s why I did it too.

We are upside-downers, but I don’t know why.

I used to put my glasses upside-down (because of the dust thing). Then I read something about how dirty the shelf of a cabinet becomes over time. (Or did somebody tell me?) Anyway, they said you shouldn’t put the rim (that you put your mouth on) on the shelf, and that risking dust is better than risking shelf germs. I was persuaded and have been a right-side-upper ever since.

But thinking about it now, I’m guessing it probably doesn’t really matter.

Interesting. I never heard that or thought of that on my own. Six of one , half dozen of the other I suppose. I wonder if I can figure out a way to stack my glasses on their sides in the cabinet.

Bet this is like the story about cutting the ends off the ham before putting it in the pan and oven because that’s just what Mom and Grandmom did. They just never told you they only did it so the big ham would fit in the not-so-big pan they had always used.
