Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Housing? Check.

I found an apartment! It is in Kihei (pronounced key’-hay), which is about a 20 minute drive from school. It’s the longest commute I’ve ever had. The apartment is part of a complex called Kihei Villages. I have never lived in an apartment complex before, so I’m kind of excited. I also like this because it’s in walking distance of the beach, it’s way north in Kihei (which means it’s closer to Kahului), and it’s a second floor. Here’s a picture of the outside:
My parking space is right next to the stairs.

On the left edge of the picture above is a plumeria tree. A plumeria tree! It’s right outside one of the bedroom windows. There are two bedrooms and a bath and a half. It’s plenty big for visitors. Start scheduling your appointment now!

Here are some inside pictures. It’s a blank slate right now. I think I will spend some money on a good bed, then see what hand-me-down furniture I can stock the rest of the house with.

The kitchen:
Kind of small and nondescript.

The living room:
A balcony!

I sign a six-month lease today. I don’t think I’ll sleep there until I get a bed. Paul and Ann continue to be very gracious hosts. I am so grateful for their help.

    Congratulations! It looks very nice!

So exciting!!!! Holy cow, you are in botanical heaven, huh? I imagine that your place will soon be filled with dozens of plant cuttings in paper cups. And how nice that you have a 2nd floor, so you don’t have to listen to stompers above. I am dying with the excitement of a blank slate! Thank you, thank you, thank you, for documenting it all!

And a big ‘Thank you’ to Paul and Ann! They sound like wonderful people.

I second everything Lauren said. Good for you! (I wondered if you were going to look for a furnished apartment to save the aggrevation of getting furniture there for such a short time (ahem), but this way you also have the aventure of The Hunt, eh? Good luck with all that. Craigslist Hawaii beware – here he comes…)

I LOVE it!! Beautiful! And I was thinking the same thing as Lauren…it’s like you’re in heaven! I don’t know anything about a plumeria tree, but I do see a PALM TREE right outside your balcony! I’m overwhelmed with all this wonderfulness!

(walking distance to the beach….@#$*….and of course I mean that in the nicest possible way!)

PS I think this will be one winter where SAD will have a fight on its hands…Yay!

What time does it get dark there?

    • Brad

It really doesn’t feel like January. Maybe you’re right about the SAD.

I don’t remember when it gets dark. It’s after 6 some time – maybe closer to 7.

New Hawaiian word: The balcony is typically called a lanai (lah-NYE).

Love seeing these pictures, and hearing your stories. We went to Oahu back in 2004 for our 10th anniversary. Loved every minute.
