Two Day Weekend

Because of the conference days last week, and because Friday and yesterday were parent/teacher conference days, I did not spend any time on Saturday or Sunday grading or planning. That meant I had a two day weekend. It was wonderful! I got a lot of rest, but I also got some things done around my house.

I weeded and planted the area in front of my pond. I plan to use it as a bedding garden. I will plant it with a changing array of ever-blooming annuals. The winter flowers will be pansies. They survive through til spring here in Baltimore.

I got yellow, purple, and red.

I also cleaned my fish tank. It has cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to eradicate this kind of algae – unless I want to completely dismantle the tank and soak everything with concentrated bleach. Even then, it may still come back. So instead, I’m sentenced to small, frequent cleanings.

It looks nice for now.

It’s funny, because I only spent maybe two hours on each project. I sometimes have two hours at home after school and before bed, but I never seem to have the energy. Maybe I’ll try to arrange for more two day weekends in the future.

    Hooray for a real weekend!!

Do you think the algae came with the tank? If not, it was probably one of those fish. The guy on the right looks untrustworthy.

Great job on both projects! And I didn’t know pansies last thru til spring. So if I put them on my porch, I’ll have blooms now?

Yes, blooms now, and whenever it warms up a bit. There’s usually a week in January where the pansies bloom and I can smell their delicious scent. The solid yellow ones have the strongest fragrance. And then of course in the spring, you’ll have an explosion of flowers. They’ll keep on blooming until it gets hot. They don’t like hot.
