Camp, Day One

I’m with the sixth graders on an outdoor ed field trip right now. We’re at a camp in western Maryland called Mar-Lu Ridge.  It’s a great facility. It reminds me of Heit’s Point in Missouri.

After unpacking, we got right in to the co-operative activities. There was the Seven Foot Wall:

Then the Flying Squirrel. I declined to go up. Today we will do a zip line, and I intend to try that, in spite of my fear of heights.

We made God’s eyes next. They’re harder to make than they seem.

In the afternoon, we hiked to a place called Shock Rock. It’s called that because it is under some power lines.

We ended the evening with devotions and s’mores. Some of the kids needed some tutoring in marshmallow toasting skills. One of them had exceptional talent at it.

Ah – the camp of Thurman’s youth! He spent many a happy summer as a counselor ar Mar-Lu! We even took a week once we were married to serve there. Ironically, I enjoyed the week more than he, as the camp had apparently changed much from his memories of it decades earlier. My brother-and-sister-in-law were married in their chapel, too. Nice mountain view (when the air quality allows it)! [I do seem to recall a plethora of mosquitoes, however…hope everyone came prepared for that little drawback?] Have a safe and enjoyable week in God’s country, all!

The pictures are life-sized! I feel like I’m there! It looks like a ton of fun, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your time there, mosquito-free, as Carol said.

By the way, I challenge that kid to a marshmallow toast-off. 😉

Now the pictures are tiny. I can’t seem to get them right. My phone posting software doesn’t have the same options as the regular site. I have to leave for breakfast now, so I think it’s stuck like this for now.

Oh… And there are absolutely no mosquitoes here, but the number of gnats is crazy!

You bum! Here I was feeling sorry for you with all the end of the year craziness….and you’re off having a gay old time…..roasting marshmallows to boot!
