Lummi Sticks

In music class, I have been singing the lummi stick song with the older kids. I learned this song from Dr. Martens in college. Instead of using sticks, while we sing the song, I’ve done body percussion.

A week ago, I tried using actual sticks with them. It went pretty well. It was loud, and they didn’t always hold the sticks still when I asked them to, but they did the patterns pretty well.

I cut dowels into one-foot sections.

I’d like to try it again, but I don’t think I’ll do it today. We have some music we’re supposed to know by the end of January, and that’s going to be coming along sooner than I’d like.

The lummi stick song! I can’t remember it. 🙁 How can we get sound on this thing?

You cut all those dowels for the kids? You are a-maz-ing. When Miss Buck comes with sticks or mallets for music time (with a few of the older preschoolers), she has them (and me) ‘put them to sleep’ by their feet when we’re sitting or ‘at attention’ (resting on each shoulder) when we’re standing. I am the only one to keep them still and quiet, but I have yet to see a gold star sticker or something.

I had my 5th and 6th grade students in MN do lummi sticks which I learned from Prof. Martens, also. It was one of the best music things I did. I can’t remember the song anymore.
