I See You

I have music class with each grade once a week. For all but the youngest kids, music class happens in the music room.

It’s good, because the room is far away from classrooms, so we can make a lot of noise. It’s also a big room, so when I have two grades at once (which happens a couple of times during the week), there’s enough room for everyone.

The thing I would change about the room is the piano. It’s a grand piano, and when I sit behind it, the kids can’t see me very well, which leads them to believe I can’t see them, which leads them to misbehave. If I knew how to play guitar, I think I would use that instead of the piano.

The piano does have a really nice sound.

If you could just sit on top of it and play with your hands behind your back, not looking, I think that could really help.

Alternately, just cut that piano in half.

Put a picture of your face on the other side of the music holder thingy.

I think one of Lauren’s ukuleles would work nicely.

Not that I could do this, mind ya’, but I’ve known accompanists to stand while they play and direct to try to avoid the “I can’t see you so you can’t see me” phenomenon. Is that an option for you? Would (smoke and) mirrors help?

Could you turn it sideways and rearrange the chairs?

Have you tried sitting on a phone book? Wait. Do they even make those anymore.
