Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

A Cube

Moving to Hawaii is complicated. It’s far away, and it’s across water. I briefly considered taking nothing but the clothes on my back, but I do have a few household things that I would like to take along.

There are cheaper ways to send stuff that take greater effort and more time. But I don’t have much time, and my supply of effort is running low. Instead, I’ve decided to go with a company that has a shipping container that’s a six-foot cube. They bring it to your house, you load it, you lock it, and they ship it to Hawaii. It is more expensive, but still do-able.

Yesterday I talked with the people on the phone about some questions I had, and I asked about an email they sent regarding a discount of some kind. They said they needed more containers in Hawaii, so they were offering $300 off for anyone who was going there. Woo hoo!

Now I just need to figure out which 216 cubic feet of possessions I will be taking…

I even called after the 72 hours had passed.

6x6x6, eh? Well, thanks for the daydream fodder.

    My list:
Bed & one set of bedding
    Clothes (just some)
    computer
    minimal dishes & cooking utensils
    fan
    clock
    some sort of comfy chair….
    bed bug poison
    shark gun
ocean pump, to drain that awful thing away from me

    That seems about right.

This list is pretty similar to mine actually. Except those last items. My neuroses are different than yours. Heh.

I’m glad you got a discount. What are your plans for all the stuff that doesn’t fit in the container?

I will be putting it in a pile in my yard and lighting it on fire.

Ha! Just kidding. I’m donating, giving away, or throwing away most of it. I’ll be taking a few heirloom furniture things to Nebraska this summer. I’ll stop in Seward on my way to California to ship my truck across the ocean.

Wow — a 6 foot cube. That will be an interesting photo when you’ve got it packed to the gills. Go, you minimalist!!

This is a wonderful option for you, Brad – and especially wonderful now that you get $300 off! (Do we even want to know “off what“?) I too will be excited to see the finished results before you clamp that door shut and it whisks itself magically over the ocean to your new digs.
