Colorful Conundrum

When I went to Lahaina two weeks ago, I saw an aloha shirt that I liked, but didn’t buy. It was bright orange. For a while, I have felt like there are some unwritten rules about how aloha shirts that locals wear should only be certain colors or certain styles. It kept me from buying the shirt.

But on Friday, I had a conversation with a local who said he thought there were no rules at all. I’ve had several such conversations in the last couple years. I decided to just get the dang shirt. I went back to Lahaina on Saturday.

Hilo Hattie is a well-known brand of aloha shirt. They used to have a store in Kihei. Now there's only one in Lahaina.

The shirt was on clearance, so it was (relatively) cheap.

I love the color.

I love the color.

I wore it to church yesterday. Shirts at church are usually muted blues, greys, browns, and greens. I was nervous about my bright orange shirt. But only two people said anything, and both of them complimented me. I think it’s ok.

In my tie-wearing days, I had some fun and colorful ties. I think I have license now to get all kinds of fun aloha shirts. Let the crazy commence!

I love it – it’s the color of fire! That is an awesome shirt!

I like photos of stores you visit, too. It helps me get a sense of your place.

I love your new shirt too! As I’ve gotten older I’ve gravitated towards the orange/ yellow spectrum so i think it’s really great. And yes, you wear it up! All colors no matter what! Be the bold, “shine your light”! I agree with Lauren on the pictures of places you go…. helps us out of town folks have a vision of where you are.
