Pretend People

I’ve gotten spam texts before, this one was really persistent. The first one came in the morning:

And they actually followed up. Twice!

I’ve read some online posts where people respond to them and try to freak them out with weird messages, or try to get them to admit they’re scammers. I didn’t really have time for that, and I also feel like if you respond, they put you on a list of “live” numbers, and will send you many more texts.

Later still, I got another spam text.

This one was asking me if I was a girl. I was tempted to take the picture from the first texter and send it to the second texter. But maybe they’re the same person…

Hate to be the one to burst this bubble, but this is nothing special any more (sad to say). On FB I often get replies to posts (some years old even) from strangers who may or may not be male telling me how much they appreciate my posts/picture/whatever and would I please “friend” them as they are somehow unable to make their friend requests go through (“maybe because, if I don’t know you, I’d ‘decline’ that request?”). At first I reported this to FB, but they assured me this was not against their social acceptability (really?!) so I should just try deleting or hiding any similar comments. It’s a little creepy but I haven’t been called “Zack” or “Anna” yet, so at least there’s that.

I’ve seen the posts where they are stringing the spammer along – sometimes they’re pretty funny.

I had one of those a couple of months ago and fell for it for a while. It was some Nebraska number and they were trying to get in touch with their dance teacher. I said they had the wrong number and they should google the name of the studio. The person thanked me and said we should now be friends…….. um, no.
