Decision Time

I think I’m to the point where I have to decide how to cut my hair next. It’s gotten long on top, but also on the sides and back. The advantage of the really short haircut is that scalp shows through all over my head and the sides look like the top. When my hair is long on the sides and back, the top looks really thin. I think I should have my sides and back clipper-cut. I think that would make the top look a little better. But there is great danger that I will look like a Q-Tip head from the early nineties. And I would look like an old Q-Tip head.

So my next decision is how to get it done. I could have Denis try it, but if something goes wrong, it will have been a friend who did it, not a stranger. I could go to a hair-cutting place, but I’m not sure how I would describe what I want.

I’m starting to falter here. I’m trying to stay excited about a different hairstyle, but it’s weird and fraught with indecision. Fashion is so emotionally costly…

Shaggy sides.

Hair Update

“Happy Birthday!” to my niece Alicia and my brother Brent.

My progress toward having Alton Brown hair is moving along slowly. Yesterday I got Denis to trim around my ears and neck, so I thought I should show where I am in the process. I am using an American Crew product in my hair right now. It’s called “thickening lotion”. Mostly it’s just wax. But it’s enough to make my hair stand up for now.

Last Thursday, two different people made separate comments on my hair, so it must be looking different. I feel a little strange about how it looks, but I’m going to keep it up for a little while to see what happens. If I really don’t like it I can always just shave it all off. I wish the weather would hurry up and cool down. Having more hair on my head is hot!

Here’s a “before picture” from one of my old “haircut” posts:
Short and conservative.

And here’s my long, long hair right now:
Long and dangerous.

Alton Brown Hair?

It’s getting to be time for a haircut. My hair can actually look messy when I get out of bed in the morning. But before I cut it, I’ve been thinking: maybe it’s time for a style change. There isn’t a whole lot you can do when your hair is so thin, but I have noticed and admired Alton Brown’s hair. He seems to have about as much hair as I do, but he does something quite different with it. He lets it grow and then keeps it kind of crazy-sticking-up-all-over-the-place.

Maybe I’ll let my hair grow a little while longer…

Here are some pictures of his hair. The first couple are a little more tame. The last one is the “Mad Scientist” look. Could I pull off the “Mad Religion Teacher” look? Hmmm…

Shorter...

Longer...

Crazy!

Clipper Guard Failure

I had Denis cut my hair last night. I wanted to look good for new student orientation tonight. They come to a cookout at 6, then hear some presentations at 7. After that they walk the school building to familiarize themselves with the layout, find their homeroom, maybe get a locker, etc. It’s a nice way to ease into the year.

While he was blending the #3 on top with the #1 on the back, the guard on the clipper slipped up and off. Denis said, “Oh no!” Then he said, “Just kidding. Can you imagine getting a bald spot there? Heh, heh.” After getting the guard put back on, he went back to where he left off. Then he said, “Oh, no!” I said, “Heh, heh.” Then he said, “I’m not kidding.” Doh!

So I do have a little line the back of my head. It looks kind of like those bald spots people get when they have a scar on their head. Denis asked if we have a word for that. I don’t think we do. He said in Cebu they call it a pahak, and it’s something people get made fun of for. On the playground, kids will say, “Pahak! Pahak!” to someone who has a line like that.

I sure hope there aren’t any cruel Filipinos from Cebu at new student orientation tonight.

Pahak! Pahak!

A Visit to the Lab

I went to my doctor a couple of weeks ago for the follow-up exam for the Lumpkin removal. Since I was there, he wanted me to do some bloodwork… cholesterol and stuff like that. We also talked about the penicillin allergy thing. I decided to go with the less adventurous option of seeing the allergist.

The allergist said there were several options and explained them to me at great length. Interesting fact: 10% of the population says they are allergic to penicillin. Only 10% of those people actually are, meaning only 1% of the general population has a penicillin allergy. We decided to start with a blood test. If the blood test is positive, I’m allergic. If it’s negative, that’s inconclusive. Then I’ll come into his office and he’ll give me some penicillin and see what happens.

I finally got to the lab yesterday morning. It had to be a fasting test for the cholesterol part. The woman took six tubes of blood, and I didn’t pass out! Yay, me! Then she gave me a urine sample cup. Yikes! I wasn’t prepared for that. It was already 8:30am. By that time of the day I’ve already peed twice! I did okay though. Here’s the “before” shot. (Sorry, I didn’t take an “after”.)

Please wash hands when finished.

So why did I have to do a urine specimen? Isn’t that just for drug tests? Maybe it’s because my hair was so long and hippy-like. I cut my hair last night so I would look respectable again.

Before: long and hippy.
After: short and nifty!
