Christmas in Middle School

We had a long homeroom period yesterday, so we had the kids decorate their lockers. We tried to do themes by grade. The eighth grade (which is what my homeroom is) had a theme of the wise men and the star of Bethlehem. One of the eighth grade homerooms was going to put a message up on their bank of lockers: “Wise Men Still Seek Him”. The other homeroom would do stars, and my homeroom was to do wise men and gifts.

I didn’t give much instruction or ride them very hard, so it was chaotic and I felt like nothing was being done, but in the end it turned out okay. They wrapped their locker doors like Christmas presents. Nobody was doing wise men though, so I asked them to make one if they were finished. Here is my favorite one.

Influenced by Picassos earlier work, this piece has certain cubist themes in the body of the figure. Yet, the styling of the head makes a nod to the renaissance the of folk-art masters.

I love it – very Picasso-esque. “Artsy, two-dimentional men still seek Him.”

Dang! I just say your picture caption. I’m not being original at all! Grrr.

And where does the punk green hair fall? Into the late 90s Seattle grunge era?
