Okay, sorry for another plant post, but this is a big event.
This is my “corn plant”. Latin name: Dracaena fragans.
These are quite common houseplants because they’re so easy to keep alive. I have it in my computer room, which is my “jungle room”. So why am I excited? Because it’s blooming! Actually, my corn plant blooms every spring. The blooms are among the most powerfully scented flowers I’ve ever encountered. The year it bloomed it’s heaviest, I could smell it when I walked in the front door… down the hall and down the stairs!
This year, there’s only one bloom stalk. It’s still a big deal though. It still smells good. According to this page, it’s kind of unusual for a corn plant to bloom anyway:
Yellow flowers, very scented in ending panicles, only appear in adult samples being more than 1.80m tall. Blooming is usually very rare, since it only happens once or twice throughout its live.
Pretty cool, eh?
So what does it smell like? I’ve smelled your grape Kool-Ade plant. Does this give off some other yummy drink smell? Perhaps mango margarita?
Do you ever get cornfused and try to detassel your corn plant?
Hey … where’d my comment go?
I had a corn plant once and in the 2nd year I owned it, it became covered with the white, pompom blossoms. It was the end of winter and it made my whole house smell like a sweet, fruity flower. It was strong and amazing. I had never before seen that, and haven’t since then. I guess I was blessed
Isn’t it amazing, Val? I have trouble describing the smell. It is heavy and perfumy, but not sickening. I loved the smell. I don’t have the corn plant any more. Maybe I should think about getting another one…
ours just bloomed it smells so good too bad its outside and not inside ………….since we live in fla
Hi John. That’s one of the awesome advantages of living in zone 11. I think there are a lot of fragrant things I’d be growing if I lived in Florida. At least in the summer my garden here in Maryland is full of flowers that smell nice.
