Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Black Friday in New York

I didn’t get up crazy early to go shopping yesterday. I really enjoy the Black Friday experience, but I wasn’t excited about it enough that I would get up early enough to be at Best Buy by 4:55am or anything.

Instead, I got to Macy’s by about 10:30am or so. It was incredible! There were so many people packed into that building, I’m sure some fire codes must have been violated. The most exciting thing was riding down escalators where the crowd at the bottom wasn’t moving anywhere. More and more people were piling into each other. I thought for sure there would be a crushing death. I wasn’t out to buy anything, but because of the cold weather yesterday, I got a scarf. It was on sale even!

The crowds were breathtaking. I mean literally. People were crushed up against each other. It was a claustrophobic's nightmare.

After Macy’s, we took in some sights. Here I am in front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. It’s not lit yet.

Check out my new scarf!

We passed by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, so we went in. It was very column-y and weighty inside. I liked it.

What kind of funny caption can you write about a church that won't get you struck by lightning?

Next, a stop at Grand Central Station to catch a subway to a communist restaurant called Republic. Can you spot me in this picture?

What's the name of that movie where they ballroom dance here?

And the surprise of the day: Teddy Roosevelt’s birthplace. We just happened to walk by. The plaque said he lived here until he was 15.

I coulda ridden with the Rough Riders, by golly.

We finished the evening by watching The Hitman. Since the theater was in New York and couldn’t go out, it had to go up and down. Screen 13 is underground. Yet another fun experience for a claustrophobe.

I heart NY. I’m glad you’re having fun. I have such a long list of things I haven’t done in NY that I’m sure I’ll never get them done in my whole life. One of them is see a movie, so now I can live vicariously. Thank you, Brad.

    Two things…

First, I think Screen 13 may have been underground enough to protect you from that nuclear bomb you’re afraid of (except for that pesky number 13…).

Second, what the heck is a communist restaurant?

  3. Lauren

Dang it, Beth, you took my communist comment! I was going to say, “Communist? Each person only eats as much as they need and pays as much as they can? What’s up with that?”

I got lost in Macy’s my first and only time there, and it was on Black Friday. I got caught in that crazy escalator ngihtmare and when I looked around – everyone was gone. (Or maybe tht was a time machine. Scratch that.)

I think the movie was The Fisher King. Where are you in the picture? Holding the camera?

  4. Brad

Ha! I actually thought about being a little more safe from nuclear attacks while watching the movie. Except I would be buried by the inevitable cave-in.

The restaurant looked communist to me because it was called “Republic”, like “The People’s Republic…”, it had a red star decorating it, and it was sparsely decorated.

In the Grand Central Station picture, I’m left of middle, looking over my shoulder. I was waiting to see if it would clear enough for me to smile at the camera.

    • Lloyd

I had you pegged as the guy in the new scarf.

  5. Peggy

New York, New York … a wonderful town …

Now it’s not that I’m jealous or anything … it’s just that, well … um, ok, I’m jealous! You get around more than Flat Stanley …

Have you seen any famous people? If you see Anderson, please call me IMMEDIATELY!

    Glad you’re having fun!

    • Beth

      Is Anderson Cooper your husband-in-waiting?

      • Peggy

Anderson, Kevin Costner, Edward Burns, Christian Bale … all in waiting.

    • Kim

I was actually thinking that Brad gets around more than Brittney Spears…Flat Stanley doesn’t sound like he gets around at all…

    A few things:

1st – I almost passed out looking at that crowd in the first picture – it triggered my claustrophobia.

2nd – I was excited at first when I thought your scarf might be chocolate brown (as revealed in the 2nd picture) but then in the 5th picture it looks plum. Which is it? Is it like the sofa you dyed. Plum-looking color in Bradaptation land, yet more chocolatey in person.

3rd – I’m digging your superhero pose in the last picture. Rescue me Bradman! I’m grading and I can’t stop!

Great comments by everyone…I enjoy all of them….

You sure brought back a lot of memories, the most vivid one is that the last time we were in New York it was sleeting, snowing, raining, frosty, icing…..etc. and Uncle Lyle had a scrunched up sour puss look in every picture we had taken…..it was remarkable to see everything again. I am so glad that you are blessed to go see these places and have a wonderful way of creating memories.

    Love,
    Aunt Bev 🙂

P.S. I guess my eyesight didn’t allow me to find you in the picture at all.!!! My first thought was “Where’s Brad???” You could make your own new series of books!
