Voluntary Fast

I have had times when I went too long without eating because I got caught up in something or because I wasn’t near any place with food, but yesterday was the first time in a long time that I didn’t eat because I chose not to. I had to go back for my second visit to the medical study place for my official first visit. They needed to do a fasting blood test. Fortunately, I was allowed to have something at 6am. But then I couldn’t eat again until after the blood test at 3:30pm.

The questions I answered as further screening yesterday made me grin while the doctor was asking them. Fortunately for me, a Middle School sense of humor does not disqualify me from this study. The questions he asked were things like: In the last year, have you felt compelled to do certain things, like wash your hands repeatedly or re-arrange things into categories or other special arrangements? Have you seen things that other people cannot see? Have you received any special messages by radio, TV, or newspaper? Do you feel as if there are people involved in a secret plot to get you? I just kept saying “no”. It’s what the voices in my head told me to say.

When it was all over, I had to wend my way through the maze-like building to get back to my truck. (I think the twisty building is part of a plot to get me.) Once I got to my truck, I tore open a granola bar and savored it’s sweet, sweet goodness. Mmm… food…

My fingernails are freakishly long again. How does that keep happening?

Your voices are funny! And I just have to say – messages from tv, radio or newspaper? That’s crazy! Everyone knows that the messages come from the toaster. Stupid doctors. What’s that, toaster? Yes, I will get the money for you. It’s coming, it’s coming.

Stephen Lynch has a great song called “Voices in my Head” on his latest CD (The Craig Machine). If you haven’t heard it, you should. It’s really funny. 🙂

P.S. Disclaimer for anyone who has never heard of Stephen Lynch and decides to check him out: Stephen Lynch is a comedian who is bit off-color. He’s not for the faint of heart or easily offended.

      Thank you. PSA over.

Well Howard Hughes, forget the blood tests & questions … it’s obvious from your choice of foods after fasting all day that you are definately depressed.
A granola bar? Sweet, sweet goodness?

When you begin to look like Russell Crowe (as John Forbes Nash), who cares where those special messages come from!

My only real question after following this thread for two days now is this:

Why do school administrators omit these telling questions from their hiring interviews?! Heaven knows I for one would never be working where I am now if anyone had asked me half those things….and now, I have to wonder about a few other good folk…and please excuse me – I’m getting a fax from our microwave…
