Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Still Not Done

I thought yesterday would be a short day. The lawyers were going to present their closing arguments, then we would deliberate, then it would all be over.

I was wrong.

After five hours of deliberating, we still couldn’t come to a consensus. We had even gotten our lunch “to go” and brought it back to the jury room so we’d have more time. It’s frustrating, but interesting. And we don’t know what to do. It doesn’t seem right for people to change their verdict from “Not Guilty” to “Guilty” (or vice versa) just to be unanimous. And it doesn’t seem likely that anyone will persuade each other.

So the judge is bringing us back this morning. Will he have us deliberate some more? I think at least in the morning we will. Will he have us deliberate all day? It may be possible. Would we continue on Monday? (Please, no. Please, no. Please, no. Please, no. Please, no.)

Meanwhile, I’m freaking out a little. I missed my regular appointment with the medical study people yesterday, my kids continue to do busywork at school, YouthQuake starts TONIGHT, and Second Quarter grades are due Wednesday morning. Sheesh!

I did risk bringing a camera yesterday. After everybody left last night, I quickly sneaked a picture of the room we spent all day in:

I sit in the middle chair on the facing side, under the purple poster.

UPDATE: Today we were officially declared a hung jury. The trial is declared a mistrial. I don’t know if that means it’s dismissed, or if it’s tried again. If you want to talk about the details of the trial, I would be glad to do so, but I’m not posting them. Besides, I’ve already made THREE POSTS IN A ROW about this. And, as Peggy is showing below, it gets really hard to make comments on something when it’s the same subject over and over.

Good grief. I don’t envy you one little bit. At least your chairs are padded. Did you guys have to drink all that water lined up against the wall?

  2. Peggy

Yep, that’s an empty room alright … with purple chairs … um … yea ….

(Good Luck today! I’m sure there will be a decision of some sort by noon today!)

An update has been added to the original post.

No, it’s only slightly difficult to make a comment when you have no information (beings you were sworn to secrecy and all). We’ve been waitly patiently for the details man. Bring ’em on!!!

I’m interested in your trials, but I’d really like to hear about your tribulations.

I’m nosy!! Can you at least post a link to a newspaper article about the trial?

      Here Karla:
Two boys (young men), pulled over by the cops. Cops found guns in their car. Each boy had 6-10 charges against him. The trial was basically over whether the guns were theirs and whether they knew the guns were in the car or not, thus making them guilty of the charges.
Send me your email (I apparently didn’t save it last time, silly me), and I’ll tell you a bit more…
