Yesterday was the last day of the Maryland State Fair. It seemed a shame to let it go by without attending, so I went.
It was lunchtime when we got there. I had a smoked ham sandwich and corn on the cob. It was delicious. For dessert, I had funnel cake, candy, a carmel apple, and cotton candy. Ehhxcellent!
There are things I never miss when I go to the Maryland State Fair. I always visit the cow building, I always see the honey bees and flowers in the small building by the front entrance, and I always visit the vendor pavilion. All three were not disappointments this year. I saw the grand champion cow being announced, I got to talk to a honey bee guy about the swarm I saw (he said they’re going to die because they swarmed too late), and a visit to the vendor pavilion always includes a run-through of the candy room.
It was fair-tastic!
The magical Candy Room. Candy is sold by the pound. You carry a basket and fill it yourself. Awesome!
Ohhhhh… we were planning to go to the fair, but then we decided to go on a hike instead. I’m explaining to the children about free entertainment. (Because, you know, we wouldn’t be able to go to the fair without a ride wristband… at $20 each!
But I’m jealous anyway.
We went hiking too. Did you go to Catoctin State Park?
Love Catoctin, but no. We went to Lake Frank, which is an easy trail in Montgomery County. Where did you hike in Catoctin? Over to the falls?
We wanted to do the falls, but ended up at Wolf and Chimney Rock…lots of fun! We will have to check out Lake Frank.
Poor bees.
A room full of candy? How did you get out of there alive? I would have thought it would be a place to gorge yourself silly. Willy Wonka Watch out!
Does the candy room work like the produce aisle in the grocery store? Put stuff in your bag and sample as much of it as you can while browsing so the bag weighs less at check out? 😉
Your dessert list sounded indeed heavenly, so I tried them all for my lunch today, before I went on the air:

The Freys missed the Fair this year (moment of silence) because Thurman was in Hagerstown and Carol was back at school cursing the printer server for thwarting her paper-running-off plans for the day. We go to view the hand work in the building to the right after you pass the tiny house facade off to the left [allegedly encasing the world’s smallest woman or something similar] and for the funnel cakes, fried Oreos, now fried Twinkies and whatever else they throw in the deep fryer. In that regard, it is far healthier to stay back and curse technology…but I still missed seeing the quilts, knitting, cross-stitching….sigh.
Did you see any kids from school? The girls on the right side of your picture look like two of our seniors – I won’t mention names. I want to protect their identity!
Lindsay and Courtney?
Lindsay and Kelly T. – but I think KT’s thigh’s might be a little … different shape.
