Milky Deliciousness

Whenever I go to the Korean grocery store (which isn’t very often but surprisingly more than just once a year), I check for milk candy. Asian people, as a group, seem to have higher rates of lactose intolerance than other groups of people, but for some reason have a taste for sweetened condensed milk. Thai Iced Tea is a good example: It is a delicious concoction of exotically spiced tea and sweetened condensed milk. It is easliy my most favoritest drink in the whole world.

Milk candy is exactly what it’s called – candy made with milk that tastes like sweetened condensed milk. Aside from Fun Dip, it is the best candy ever. I went to the store two weeks ago and they had milk candy! I bought two packages. One stayed home and one went to school. My school package just ran out. I’m rationing the home package until I go back for more. Maybe next time I’ll buy four packages. It is so delicious!

It's like sucking on buttercream frosting.

    Mmmmm…sweetened condensed milk…. I LOVE that stuff.

Yet another weird fact about me: sometimes I open a can just so I can eat a spoonful every once in a while for a couple days. Mmmmmmmm…

Buy me some of that candy.

Maybe we North American Caucasians are the odd ones – I seem to recall my late friend Sandy (of Puerto Rican extraction) introducing me to Dulce de Leche, which also had the sweetened condensed milk thing going for it. No idea what the Hispanic incidence of lactose intolerance is…but my mother (born in Celle Hanover DDR) was lactose intolerant.

    Are we totally confused yet?

Even though I’ve never actually tasted sweetened condensed milk, I have always wanted to try the Sweet Potato Queens’ Danger Pudding – boiling an unopened can of it in a pot of water until it caramelizes. It’s extremely dangerous, due to the possibility of the can exploding, so she writes, “If you’re afraid, come on over to my house and I’ll make it for you. I am very brave.”

Boiling an unopened can of pudding or an unopened can of sweet potatoes?

Sorry – an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk. I’m an idiot.

What is nice about the taste of THAT candy is that it doesn’t make you want a glass of milk afterwards like regular old chocolate candy does!

I love to eat things that make me crave a big ‘ol glass of milk afterwards! In fact, if it wasn’t for my love of milk, I bet I’d eat a lot healthier.

And I think the Milk Candy has more of a butterscotch taste to it than milk.
