Energy Conscious

I stopped at Home Depot to more birdseed yesterday. Lowes is a better place for birdseed because it’s cheaper and doesn’t have corn in it, but Home Depot is on my way home. While I was there I also got a light bulb. The bulb in my kitchen just burned out.

While trying to decide if I should get a regular bulb or a “natural light” bulb, a guy walked up and said he was from BGE (the electric company here) and wanted to ask me a couple of questions that would only take thirty seconds. I agreed, so he asked. It took more like five minutes, but that was okay. I wasn’t in a hurry.

First he asked if I used CFL’s. I wouldn’t know what that was, but he held one up while asking. They’re the squiggly fluorescent light bulbs. And actually I do use a few of them. I like that they last a long time, and I like that they give you a lot of light for the wattage. He asked me what percentage of my house was CFL’s. I didn’t know. I said 40%. It’s more like 6%.

Then he asked what energy-saving measures I take at home. I almost laughed. Instead I made something up. I said that I turned lights off when I leave rooms (which I don’t), and that I open windows at night and close them during the day to cool the house (really I just turn on the air conditioner). Then he started pressing me for more answers. “Do you use weather stripping?” No. “Do you take short showers?” No. “Do you do laundry late at night?” No.

I guess I’m not very energy friendly. Comfort is more important. And laziness always wins. And I spend a lot of money on electricity.

These are brighter than they look. They blinded the camera and made the picture dark.

    Ha!

Did you win a prize for lying answering his questions? A coupon? A free light bulb? One of these? http://www.ohgizmo.com/2008/03/06/ice-cream-fixtures-taste-like-delicious-shards-of-glass/ (Will you make that a link for me, please?)

Now that’s a lo-cal cone if I ever saw one – particularly if you choose to eat one and the glass shards rip your intestinal tract to smithereens.

      Brilliant idea there….get it? “Brilliant”……..

–back to eating her lightbulbs ice cream

It must be a sort-of-hell to come to the ever more crazed world of ecolauren every Summer.

Heh. I do everything but use those light bulbs. I like incandescent light, and try as they will to make the CFLs “warmer”, they can’t do it.

Incandescent will always be better light for me. And sugar always trumps artificial sweetners.

I run my dishwasher and washing machine at night. Mainly because I like things working for me while I sleep.

      I like that.
