Work Day

Yesterday instead of after-school meetings, we had a work day. We did this at the beginning of the year too. This time, I worked with other people instead of doing something by myself. It was really fun. I started the day by helping move all the furniture out of certain rooms in the Middle School building. Over the summer, they always strip and wax all the tile floors.

After lunch, we worked on emptying the portable classrooms. We’re getting rid of them because they are so expensive to keep paying rent on. Every scrap of furniture in them had to be moved down the hill into the field house. After carrying a few by hand, we decided to use my truck. We loaded it up, I drove the furniture down to the filed house, and we unloaded it.

Kim’s and Michele’s kids were there to help, which was nice, because since they are kids, they are not old and decrepit. After the first couple of loads, they started riding back to the portable in the empty truck. Then they started riding down to the field house on top of the furniture in the full truck. It made some people nervous to see it, but the kids were having a blast and had joy in their work. By the time we were all finishing with stuff at 3, the guy in charge of summer work said we’d done over two weeks worth of work in one day. Yay!

Here is the most amazing truck ride from yesterday: a desk was sitting upright on top of the pile and Michele’s son David rode down to field house sitting in it.

One of the best childhood memories was riding on top of the load of grass clippings (covered by a tarp) in the back of my Dad’s Scout when we’d take it to the dump. It was a bare-bones vehicle – all metal inside, like an Army jeep – and it was really noisy and rattly. *sigh* Thanks for the memory. 🙂

I want you all to know that while Brad took the life of my kids into his own hands, I sat helpless in the principal’s office in a meeting and could only watch through her giant window as Brad’s truck zipped past in the distance with my kids sitting dangerously in the bed of his truck. The meeting was long and there were numerous passes of the crazy man in the white truck. Several times the principal looked at me in shock, waiting for my reaction. I just shrugged my shoulders, “Whatcha gonna do?”
It was the highlight of their day and years from now when they are Lauren’s age, they too will look back on the good times in Mr. Royuk’s truck! 🙂

Will this work as a link? Ours looked like this: http://www.roadtransport.com/blogs/big-lorry-blog/inter%204.jpg

Michele, you’re a good mom to be worried. I’ve ridden with Brad several times and he hasn’t killed me…. yet.

I’ve been transported by Brad as well, but I always wear a seatbelt and close my eyes!

Do you gasp and use the imaginary break like our Mom does?

The trick to traveling with Brad is to just sit back and enjoy the terror. It’s not that he is a bad driver; he just gives every indication that he’s a bad driver.

…”since they are kids, they are not old and decrepit.” HA!!

And I don’t get all the complaining about Brad’s driving…except, yes, he does drive a little too slow.
