Astraphobia

Yesterday afternoon there were some rather impressive thunder storms in Baltimore. I had trouble seeing the storm very well because I was driving and my windshield was awash with water. When I’m at home during thunderstorms, I often go out onto the porch to enjoy them. This time I was trying not to crash into people who were suddenly slamming their brakes on because it was raining.

When I got home, the first order of business was to close the windows, though most of the damage was already done. Second order of business: find Max. He didn’t greet me at the door begging for food. That’s kind of weird, so I thought I should find him. He wasn’t in his bed upstairs. He wasn’t on the couch. I looked under furniture upstairs and downstairs. Nothing. I went to the basement. While I was down there, he stepped out from behind the boiler. I carried him upstairs, but he refused to come away from the basement door. I kept wondering if his animal senses were telling him something bad was going to happen, but nothing did.

After the thunder stopped, Max went to eat something, then sat with me on the couch and pretended like nothing was wrong. I guess he doesn’t like storms.

Perhaps being with shoes makes him feel safer. Or maybe it's the cow.

That is the sweetest picture in the whole wide world. Poor little Max – did the sky go boom?

He looks so much like leather. I bet it is the cow. By the way, what is that thing that’s going to keep the door from shutting all the way?

      That’s the cow. *sigh*

I like to keep the basement door mostly shut in the summer so the cold air doesn’t all go down there, but once upon a time Ned got shut out of the basement and pooped in the dining room, so I got that cast iron cow (from that antique warehouse in Nebraska) to hold the door open.

Today will be better Max… singhiozzerebbe no more!

Sitting with shoes does actually seem to make Riley a happy kitty (4 1/2 months old now he is – we’re so proud). This is most true when the shoes have laces he can play with…and when I say “play” I really mean “have a religious experience”. So far we’ve not seen any particular reactions to thunder boomers (there was a tornado warning just now, but no action in beautiful downtown Rosedale by which to test feline responses) but I should think cowering in the basement behind anything could have negative repercussions if one’s basement tends to flood in excessive downpours as ours does. Poor Max – perhaps some tranquilizers before expected severe weather…?
