Yard Cat

I came home later than usual last night because it was Parents-to-School Night. I was talking to Lauren as I came home and my signal got weak when I went inside, so I sat on the steps outside as I talked with her. While sitting there, I saw one of my yard cats. There are two of them I see with regular frequency now. One is orange and one is gray. Neither one of them has a collar. And neither one will let me anywhere near them, which surprises me a little because I’m good at cat-speak.

I sense that the orange one is the hunter and is responsible for the pile of feathers I saw a couple weeks ago. But the gray one seems to be a hunter too:

Watch out fish!

Klingon dictionary…cat-speak…is there no means of communication that alludes you?!

I found myself overusing teacher-to-parent speak last night. “Your son or daughter will need to — to be successful in this class, but you know we’ll do all we can to assist with that. Keep the doors of communication open; e-mail any time; blah blah blah.” [What I might have wanted to say was more like, “I’ve been out of the house since 5:30 this morning, and I imagine many of you work for a living as well, so if you don’t have any particular questions, grab a hand out and let’s all get outta Dodge, shall we?”]

…and what exactly is your pond picture trying to show us – it’s so dark on this end of cyberspace I cannot even make out any fish this time. Is the grey cat lurking at the edge of the pond? How nice that you now have three cats but only have to feed and change litter for one!

“Well, your daughter is getting a B in chemistry but she’s doing all her work and is very conscientious.”

“What can she do to get an A?”

“What grade did you get when you took chemistry in high school?”

        Haha!

It is fitting that the darker one should hunt at night. Hey, I guess it was Back to ‘School’ night for the cat, too? Wocka wocka wocka.

    Your yard cats need names.

    • Lloyd

Lauren calls the cats down the street, “cat” and “other cat”. I suggest those names.

      • Lauren

        Yeah, but I’m heartless.

        • Deborah

          I like mustard.

Maybe your yard cats are afraid of your sense of humor…maybe they’re afraid if they drop their defenses you’ll do this to them:
