King Syrup

I should have posted about this yesterday, but I was so excited about my new shoes I had to write about them instead.

This past weekend I finally tasted something I’ve heard many endorsements for: King Syrup. I made pancakes for the occasion. The syrup was very thick. It reminded me of corn syrup. I liked the thickness because that meant it didn’t run off the pancake. But I didn’t like the flavor.

Maybe part of it was that I’m so used to a maple flavor when I eat pancakes, but part of it was definitely that I didn’t like the flavor of King Syrup. It’s kind of a molasses-y flavor (which I like), but it tasted sort of anise to me as well (which I don’t like). And for all the times I heard King Syrup was sweet, well… it just didn’t taste sweet to me. At least not as sweet as maple-flavored syrup.

I don’t know of any other way to eat syrup except on pancakes, so I’ll have to say King Syrup is a “no” for me. Sorry, people who like King Syrup.

Do you say 'seer-rup' or 'sur-rup'?

Wow – you committed to a large amount of syrup for a first-time test. You are brave! I’m not partial to anything but maple syrup, too, unless it’s strawberries and whipped cream. on waffles.

    I say ‘sur-up.”

Too bad on that. I’ve never used syrup on anything else other than pancakes either. So what does one do with a HUGE bottle of the stuff?

Bring it to school. If you simply put it in the faculty room with a sign “Free to a good home.” I am sure it will disappear. That’s how desperate we are for free food!
The other option is to secretly leave it open in a locker over the weekend so we can have a “school closed due to ant problem” day off.

        You. Are. A. Genius.

Please wait until mid-winter to do that now, though, in case we don’t get the snow days for which I’ve been doing ritual sacrificing for months. (Since I’m new to ritual sacrificing, I may have a few things wrong – like is it the entrails or the eyeballs one is supposed to roast over an open fire…or maybe it’s the chest****…?)

Here is everything you need to know about King Syrup: http://www.southernreader.com/SouthRead10.9.html

And here is a recipe for shoo-fly-pie, apparently a must-have southern treat: http://www.maplesprings.com/shooflyrecipe.html

Good luck using up that syrup!

You’re right – shoo-fly pie is made with that tar stuff, and my husband loves shoo-fly pie. We Romans would say de gustibus non disputandum est to that one.

I LOVE that seer-rup!! Love. That’s all we used growing up. But I’m the only one in my household who uses it now. I can assure you there is no anise in it. You can give me your ginormous bottle…or it works wonder as a super glue or ceramics, wood, and terra cotta.

      …please edit…works wonders…on ceramics…sheesh

I have eaten King Syrup ALL of my life. It’s great on Pancakes. But I love it on toast with bacon or sausage . Also get a stick of butter and take about 1/3 of it and mix it with 2/3 cup of King Syrup. Put that on toast. Mmmmmmmm!!
