Annapolis Field Trip

Yesterday was Field Trip Day for the Middle School. The sixth graders went to Washington D.C. The eighth graders went to Philadelphia. I went with the seventh graders to Annapolis.

In the morning, we went to the Banneker-Douglass Museum. It’s about freed slaves, the underground railroad, and smart people. I really like how the heroes of this museum are smart. Benjamin Banneker’s story is particularly appealing to me.

Our guide tells us a little about Ben.

After the museum, we headed to the Naval Academy. It was a great tour. Our guide was awesome. We got to go into the dormitory, Bancroft Hall. It’s humongous. And the entryway is beautiful. On our way in, we even got to see a group in their white uniforms gathering for a picture.

The courtyard was HUGE!

There were some really cool wall sconces in Bancroft. I want one. Internet Buddies, start your searching! Let me know when you find one.

They're seriously angry fish or they're sea monsters. I'm not sure which.

    Did Bancroft smell like Biltz?

      Hehe… no.

I don’t think they allow anything to smell at the Naval Academy. The rules are very strict.

I just pulled a you – I spent ten minutes reading about Benjamin Banneker and looking for “gargoyle lamp sconce”. No luck.

That is a very cool field trip. Way to immerse those kids in handy history!

How much is it worth to ‘ya to get your hands on one of those sconces? Beings I’ll have a direct in next Fall, I’ll see what I can do.

(My son Matt will be going to the Naval Academy in the Fall for one semester. He won’t be in that snappy white over white dress though…his will be white over gray. And in Dec. he’ll be part of the ‘Prisoner Exchange’ at the Army/Navy game. Hehe…)
