The Smell

For a while now, my classroom has smelled like feet. It’s been driving me crazy trying to find the source. Kids complain as they enter the room, I burn some matches, and the problem is put off to another day.

I had resigned myself to the fact that I must live in stinky-foot-smell-world forever, when suddenly yesterday my room smelled different. It smelled like a Christmas candle. It was a cinnamon-spicy smell. Kids coming into the room would say: “It smells good in here.” and “What’s that smell?” and “Why does it smell like gum in here?”

This fragrance was easier to pinpoint. And I think I found the source of the foot-smell too:

It's the gym bag!

One of my students has been storing this oversize gym bag in my classroom during the day so its contents can be used for athletic practice after school. I sniffed it, and it smelled great yesterday. A giant improvement over the last couple weeks! Thank you student! (…or mom of student who made this happen!)

Whew. For a minute I thought you were going to say that Superman’s feet were stinky, and we all know that there is no pair of Odor Eaters strong enough to take on imaginary 2-dimensional superhero foot stink.

Yes. Thank you Mom. Because every mom knows you’re the one who emptied out that bag, washed all the contents, Lysoled the shoes, disinfected the bag itself, returned the cleaned contents, purchased a cinnamon tree and lovingly unwrapped that tree and tucked it inside. Thank you Mom of the bag-boy.

I think you should consider polishing up your Monk skills. The oversized gym bag wasn’t a clue for you at all? I’m just saying….

I actually did smell the bag looking for the feet-smell. I think the problem was that I had been in the room all day at that point. My nose was already deadened.

Ah, yes – olfactory fatigue! This is what also causes me to look puzzled when students who enter my room after I have burned an expensive candle for a while exclaim, “Why does it smell like (insert undesirable aroma here) in here?!” Sigh.

…and, like Lauren, I am relieved to know you were not intimating that the Man of Steel had Feet of Cheese or something.

    Hehe…
He says it’s from a TV series in Australia.
