A Day with Kinfolk

Yesterday morning there was some audio-visual equipment dedicated in memory of my Grandma Royuk at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington, Nebraska. I attended the church service with my mom and dad. My Aunt Bev and Aunt Gloria were there too.

After church I talked for a long time with a couple named Roy and Judy. They didn’t know me at all, and I didn’t know them, but they were excellent conversationalists and were very friendly. I liked them. Judy is a teacher and Roy is a wrestling coach, so we had a lot in common.

For lunch, my parents and aunts and I went to Village Inn, which is like Perkins, or Bob Evans, or IHOP, or some other place that serves breakfast all day. It was great. Aunt Bev knew every third person who walked in the door. Aunt Gloria was cracking us up with her stories. And I had french toast. I soaked it with syrup. Mmmm…

I almost made it back home without sleeping, but a full belly, plus early afternoon made it difficult. I was nodding off by the time we pulled up to Lloyd and Lauren’s. I finished my nap, then watched Zombieland.

It was a good day.

I have kin buried in the cemetery.

What a great old church building! That one should be charted, stitched, and framed with a caption like, …home of Judy and Roy (insert their last name here)”. It really is a cool building.

How long had Grandma Royuk been active there? Was she a choir member-altar guild-Sunday School teacher-Superwoman like most Royuks probably are? She surely left her mark there to have something permanent and useful dedicated to her. Glad you all could be a part of that acknowledgment yesterday.

I think it’s particularly funny that Brad can’t remember the name of Village Inn. “It’s that Inn place. Inn? …..Inn? Holiday Inn? Something Inn.”

Are those three people in the window churchgoers or mannequins?

It’s a new type of stained glass designed to attract new parishoners. “Hey, that must be a nice church. Look at all the people inside.”

Well, smack my butt and call my Judy!

(seriously, what’s the origin of that phrase anyway?)

Mmmm…a nice church service, breakfast, time with new & old friends, a nap AND a movie! Surely it doesn’t get any better than that!
