Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Nuts?

My lotus plants are finished blooming, but their seed heads remain. As the seeds mature, they darken. I thought they would be squishy like berries, but they’re quite hard. Curious about the whole topic, I went to the internet for information about lotus seeds. As it turns out, they’re edible. One site said they taste kind of like chiquapins. I don’t know what the heck chiquapins are, so the only reasonable way to find out what a lotus seed tasted like was to eat one.

It was incredibly hard. I think there is an outer shell that you’re not supposed to eat. I ended up spitting out the shell… or at least whatever part wasn’t stuck between my teeth. The inside of the seed actually had rather a nice flavor. It was nutty. I’m not all excited about trying another lotus seed for now, but I know if I’m ever stranded in my front yard with nothing to eat and my life depends on it, lotus seeds wouldn’t be a bad way to stay alive.

I love how weird they look.

Hey! They sell those in craft stores for a bunch of money! If you are in said stranded situation, you could sell these and buy yourself a grilled cheese instead.

(I think they look like sprinkler heads.)

I’ve always thought those looked like a shower head…

(Tara starts Kindergarten today. Her first day of school! Crazy.)

Woo hoo! Can’t wait to hear about it!

Was the secret password how to say “slipper” in Chinese? (That Uncle Brad…)

Brad , did you get my email?

    • Brad

I did, but wasn’t sure who it was, so I didn’t answer right away. I was going to answer from school, but I can’t access my hotmail from here (stupid Microsoft making stupid upgrades that don’t stupid work when I’m at stupid school!).

It’s an Arrowhead Vine, or Syngonium podophyllum. There’s lots of information on the internet about their care. They are normally very tough plants.

Thanks! I’ll let Tammy know. And next time I’ll put in the subject line “This is Karla, your friend that you’ve know since 1984!! We’ve know each other for 26 years!! (That number will increase as time goes on.)

Will that help you know who it’s from?

        😉

And why can’t I type known today? Good grief….

That totally looks like some kind of Romulan snack…which only grows in the Alpha Quandrant of the Milky Way.

I could almost picture all 8 of those faces (…come on…they do look a bit like faces, no?) singing in some sort of photosynthetic choir. Awesome picture. And Lauren is right – once dried, those are not cheap in plant stores. And if you ever really are stuck on your front lawn yadda, yadda – heck, just start walkin’ down Harford Rd;plenty a’ eateries there. You shouldn’t have to subsist on vegetative reproductive structures hard as granite!

I meant “in craft stores”…I imagine the entire plant is not cheap either, though.
