How Much Percent Profit?

I spent most of the day yesterday working at school. I didn’t like it, but I got lots done, so I feel pretty good about it. Plus, I still have today off, because it’s Sunday. Woo hoo! We should have five day weekends every week.

On my way home from school, I decided to get some rulers. I often have students do drawing assignments for me and they regularly ask to borrow a ruler. I had a bunch of rulers available, but for some reason this year, they’ve all been destroyed.

I stopped at an educational supply store. They had unbreakable rulers. I got ten of them. I’m glad they won’t break, but unfortunately, their flexible nature makes them perfect for slapping someone with. I forsee much slapping and sorrow.

I was very excited to also see a percentage calculator slide card. I’ve often wanted one, but never saw them for sale. I knew immediately I should get one. As the cashier was ringing me up I saw the price tag:

$6.99?!?

Holy cow! It’s just a piece of cardboard! How much does it cost to make? Two cents? And they’re selling it for seven dollars? That’s an obscene amount of profit! I wish I could make and sell a product for such wildly different amounts.

This is why you need an iPhone – I’m sure there’s an app for that.

You have a Lakeshore store? Man, you are lucky. We only had one classroom supply store in Lincoln and it moved, then it tanked.

Yeah, your new iPhone could already have saved you $6.99. But you don’t really need the app, because once you buy an iPhone, you just know things like that.

Thurman had one, and I had one I never used…’cept this year, I’m usin’ it. If you still have the 6.99+tax in your pocket, come see me – you can have one of mine. (I think they were $2+ when I first got mine…I’m that old…

HA! I just noticed where the headquarters for E-Z Grader is…CHAGRIN Falls, Ohio! Anybody else see any irony there? (“…and with much chagrin she opened her wallet to pay the obscene price affixed to the product…”)

Every non-math teacher in the world has an E-Z Grader brand %/grade calculator.
You pay extra for “name brands” of most everything. Whoever invented this dandy little slide gadget must be a multi-millionnaire from patrons of my generation. Where but in America!
P.S. Don’t tell the kids the rulers won’t break!

That’s great advice, “I got some new rulers over the weekend, but they are not very tough. Please be very careful with them.”

Where do I sign the petition for the 5 day weekends? (please note I’ll bargin all the way down to a 3 day weekend)
