Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

A Gift

I have a gift. Some people can forecast the newest fashions in clothing. I can forecast the newest fashions in garden plants. When it first happened, I thought it was a coincidence. But then it happened again. And again.
The list of plants I owned right before they became popular?

Musa basjoo (Hardy Banana)
Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ (English Holly)
Super-dwarf fruit trees
Eryngium (Blue Sea Holly)

“What?” you ask? “When did Blue Sea Holly become fashionable?”
Now. It’s in all the current garden catalogs. And I was already planting it last year.
Like I said – I have a gift.

The back of this catalog has a super-dwarf fruit tree AND Blue Sea Holly

I think the higher-ups in the gardening world are lurking on your website. You should plant something super bizarre and see if that’s the trend next year.

(I tried to come up with an example, but I couldn’t think of anything crazier than Blue Sea Holly. That is one weird-looking plant.)

You have one in your cutting garden. It’s next to the bucket. It blooms late in the summer, so I’ve never seen it in full bloom.

We’ll have to get you a photo! (If Lloyd hasn’t mowed it to death.)

Wow! That is so cool — you should start your own gardening magazine — not kidding. It would be great! I bet you could make big money with this one.

Now for next year, how about a Beanstalk … like the one Jack grew.

Yea! If it leads ya’ to a golden goose, or eggs of gold, or gold coins, or whatever it was Jack found up there, I’m with Peggy!

Way to go, Mr. Fashionista! We are so not on the cutting edge of fashion with our greenery, it’s quite pathetic. We are still much into wire grass, plantane, chickweed, and assorted other lawn junque – in fact, I do believe we’ve given up entirely on what most folks like to see in their yards…grass. The fontina that ate Rosedale got a major haircut over TG break, though, and is under control again at last. No more reading the newspaper on the front porch unless fully dressed from now on. Drat.

Maybe you can popularize this plant:
