Field Trip

Yesterday was Field Trip Day in the middle school. The eighth graders went to Philadelphia. The sixth graders went to Washington D.C. I went with the seventh graders to Annapolis. Over time, we planners of the trips develop itineraries that work and we kind of stick with them. The Annapolis trip currently involves a stop at the Banneker-Douglass Museum, a tour of the Naval Academy, and a little walk-around time in the Annapolis harbor area.

My favorite part is the Naval Academy. And on a beautiful day like yesterday, it was even better. The campus is gorgeous. The buildings are outstanding, and everything has such a great history.

Hearing about what it’s like to attend the academy always makes me want to be a student there. Every part of life is regulated and rigorous. In my normal life, I am in a constant struggle against my own laziness. Even small tasks require a conscious decision and an effort of willpower. But if I were a student at the Naval Academy, I would have no choice. I would have to do each task that was given to me. And I would have to do it now. No effort of will involved. It sounds like a glorious life. I’m too old and too out of shape to do such a thing, but it’s fun to imagine…

This is the dormitory. The dormitory! Isn't it beautiful?

Wow – that is an incredible building. It would be like living in a monument!

I’m with you on needing a rigorous schedule. I have two different personalities (at least): Work Me is a go-getter that’s task-focused and engaged, Home Me has trouble deciding between the computer or t.v., so I watch t.v. on the computer.

You’re making me jealous. I used to love going up to Annapolis when we lived in Virginia. I still remember where my fav shops are. Also, I’ve seen so many pictures of friends who’ve been married in the chapel at the Academy. It really is a beautiful place.

Beth, let’s go to Annapolis. What are you doing next week?

Go Army! Beat Navy! And I mean that in the nicest possible way!

Well, no, actually, you wouldn’t have to do what you were told to do…but your time in the lovely dormitory would be severely cut short, I am sure.

[Ah, the “do it now” life – shades of Willie Don Schaefer – may he rest in peace.]
