Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Winter in June

Last night for dinner, I was really craving oatmeal. It seemed like a strange thing to crave, since oatmeal is more of a “cold winter’s day” kind of food and since yesterday it was 100 degrees outside. But a craving is a craving, and I often obey mine. They say your body craves what you need, right? So I must’ve needed oatmeal.

I always have some Quaker quick oats on hand. Oatmeal is an ingredient for Grandma Hummel’s chocolate chip cookie recipe, and I always keep all the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies available.

I cook oatmeal quickly and I cook it on the dry side. When it’s ready to eat, I smother it with honey. It always looks like mashed potatoes and gravy to me. …a sweet version of mashed potatoes and gravy.

Mmm... Carbohydrates....

Yeah, that does look good. I just don’t know about oatmeal. It’s one of those ‘superfoods’ and gets full points on every scale – cheap, nutritious, and supposedly delicious. I just can’t get over the texture when it’s gooey and sticky. Yours looks just about right, though. (Plus, that is an awesome bowl!)

What do you think your body is telling you with this craving?

I should fix some oatmeal for you this summer so you can see if you like it the way I make it.

I also was wondering what a craving for oatmeal meant. I’m pretty sure it’s not about fiber.

And, just for comparison sake, you could make some more of that delicious salad that you made that one time when you were here. Just sayin.

Everytime somebody makes me oatmeal, somebody else throws up. Let’s not tempt fate.

Great….now I’m craving oatmeal & there’s not a single chocolate chip cookie to be found around here!
