A Bit of Gardening

I did a little gardening yesterday. I thought it would just be the potting of the pansies.
They will survive the winter.

But then I remembered I had some Sea Hollies to plant.
Don't worry - I fixed the exposed roots on the one in front.

And then I noticed the waterfall in the pond was looking weak, so I pulled the leaves away from the filter.
It's looking tired. I like the cycle of winter rest and spring renewal.

I still haven’t placed the rocks though. That was too big of a project.

Wow – that was a full day! I am constantly in amazement that you keep that pond going. It seems like more work than having a dog, which is the commitment all other commitments are measured by.

“The Potting of the Pansies” sounds like a great mystery novel.

Sorry, but I have nothing but questions. Is it pansy season? Yours sure look lovely! Shouldn’t they be dead. It seems so odd to me to plant things now. Are Sea Hollies the kind of plant you have to plant in the fall for them to bloom in the spring? Gardening is hard.
Did the early dark put a kink in your gardening yesterday? I was like…..well, time for bed….oops….it’s only 7:15pm.

      1) Pansies are really, really cold hardy. Planting pansies now means that any time we have a bit of a warm spell from now until March, you’ll have flowers. I sniff all the pansies at the store and only buy ones that smell. I like catching the sweet scent of flowers on a warm-ish January day.
      2) Now is a good time to plant any perennial garden plant. Their leaves look raggedy, but their roots grow until the first hard frost, giving them a great head start for next year. Plus, these were on sale.
      3) I HATE the Early Dark. This time change is the worst one of all. I could barely stay up until 8. And after 3am this morning, I was all fitful and anxious, thinking I was oversleeping.

        Gee, that was fast!

But you can’t plant a banana now, right?

Right. When you’re putting a plant in the ground that is on the edge of it’s hardiness zone… that is, it struggles to survive winter in this area…. it needs a lot of time to establish strong roots before the winter cold hits it.

And sorry I don’t have an Elvis clip to accompany my comment. 🙂

Yup – here, too. Tossing and turning. Forcing self to stay under covers though wide awake…though chiefly done so dog and cat would stay quiet longer; their tummy clocksare still on daylight’s savings time. This time of year reminds me of a Native American proverb I read a few years back that went something like this: only in our country would we think that by cutting off a sliver of a blanket from one end and sewing it onto the other we would make the blanket longer. And our Korean students seemed quite amused by the “end of summer” time change – guess they have nothing like it in Seoul? Must seem pretty peculiar to them…
