Ringing In the Season

Happy Birthday to my niece Tara! Yay!

I have already said that I like symbolism in worship. The liturgy is full of it. My church building is full of it. I even have symbols for my hand.

I have twenty-one rings to choose from each day. Sometimes I pick a ring based on what clothes I’m wearing. Sometimes it has to do with my mood. But on church holidays, my selection becomes more significant. Holy Week is an opportunity to go full-on with ring symbolism. I’m pretty sure no one knows I’m doing it except for me. Or at least no one did know, until I told the whole internet. But even if no one knew, I’d still like it.

Here’s the lineup for Holy Week:
L to R: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday

The one for Palm Sunday reminds me of leaves. Maundy Thursday has a blood-red stone – perfect for communion. Good Friday is black. Easter Sunday is the sparkliest ring. I like sparkly things. I like Easter. It’s a great match.

Cool! Did you know that buying the rings, or did you think of it afterward?

I have a necklace that my sister made when she was in youth group. It’s a crucifix made out of bent nails. I try to remember to wear it often during Lent so the children can see it and we can talk about it. Maybe I should get some rings…..

Is having 21 rings part of the symbolism; therefore keeping you from purchasing any more?

I want to see all 21 rings at once. Preferably all on your fingers. All 21 of them.
