Places I’ve Never Been: Herring Run Park and Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery

I’ve been feeling lazy since I got back from hiking. I said I was going to start exercising once I got back, but I haven’t done anything. Until yesterday. Yesterday I left my house to go for a walk. I decided I’d walk to Herring Run Park, which is a quick trip by car, but a good distance to go by foot. I’m not sure that I’ve ever been to Herring Run Park. I was curious to see what it was all about.

It seemed nice – there was a picnic area and a little play area, but it seemed kind of small. Until I saw this:
It was just asking to be crossed.

Herring Run is an actual stream that actually runs through Baltimore City. The bridge in the above picture led to a bicycle and walking path. I stopped a guy and asked him where it led. He said it went to Belair Road and back. I know Belair Road. If I followed the path, I whould easily able to get home. So I followed it.

I couldn’t believe it. It was like a forested path in the middle of the city. It followed the course of the stream. It was cool and woodsy.
It's paved even!

When I got to Belair Road, I decided not to go back on the opposite side of the stream. Instead, I would walk up to Moravia and come back that way, because that would give me a chance to pass by another place I’ve never been: the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

I often drive past this gigantic cemetery on rolling hills. The size of the place is amazing. I have been intensely curious about it, but have never taken the time to stop. Yesterday, I finally took a stroll through it.
I couldn't capture the size of the place in a picture. This is only a small portion.

At the center of the cemetery is a small chapel. At least, from the road it looks small. Get up close, and it’s really quite a large place. Unfortunately, the door was padlocked, so I couldn’t go inside. It sure was fun walking around it though. It’s a pretty imposing edifice.
It's on the highest hill in the cemetery.

After the cemetery, I went home. My walk lasted for two hours. Nothing near the seven hours we hiked while backpacking, but at least it was something.

Two hours?! That a sizable hike!

That path looks gorgeous – so lush and green. Does it follow Herring Run the whole way so you can hear the water? There’s nothing like the sound of a river/creek.

I hope sometime that chapel will be open – I’m so curious to see the inside, now.

Lauren, I thought you were going to finish “There’s nothing like the sound of a river/creek…” with “to give you the urge to pee.”

Brad, I think my grandparents on my dad’s side are buried there. I’ll have to look into that. I think their graves are closer to the Belair Road side.

I also think that stretch of Moravia was used to shoot some portion of a movie that was filmed in Baltimore.

There are no long walks after you’ve been backpacking.

You go Brad! And I would call this trek you took a hike, not a walk! I can’t believe you did it all in 2 hours! It would have taken me all day.

How many miles do you think you did? You may be starting to inspire me.

Doing two hours in the summer sun in Bawlmer is far from “lazy” – you are to be commended. [Translation: “What – you didn’t get enough abuse backpacking 40 miles?!”]

A trickle of Herring Run goes along Hamilton Ave. by Newholme Ave. just before one gets to where Bethlehem Church & Day School are. I only remember this because when I was in first grade at Hazelwood Elementary (P.S. 210 – salute!) one of my classmates, John Glenn (yes, that confused me at the time, too, as I never saw him in an astronaut’s suit…), lost his mother when her car didn’t make the curve there and went off into the Run. I always felt horrible for him and could never drive that bend in Hamilton Ave. without thining of him/her/that. So thank you for posting the lush and lovely pictures of the other side of Herring Run – hopefully those will replace the earlier ones now…

Of course, I intended that to read “thinking”, but maybe I was channeling Ricky Ricardo when I typed the first one…
