The planting bed in front of Thurman and Carol’s house is now a four-season garden. Already we had planted summer flowers in Phase One, along with evergreens for winter interest. Phase Two added fall bloomers. Yesterday I filled all the bed with daffodils.
Laying the bulbs out before planting.

Some people like to plant the same variety of daffodils in large drifts for maximum impact. I favor planting a wide variety of daffodils for longest bloom time. Some daffodils can bloom as early as February around here. Other varieties might not bloom until until May. If you plant early- late- and mid-bloomers, you could possibly have blooms for three or four months. It does require a little searching though. You might have to go to an actual garden center to get your daffodil bulbs. Then you just look on the label. Their bloom times are marked there. I ended up planting about 80 or 90 bulbs.
A nice collection.

This really should be a care-free garden. Perhaps a little pruning to help shape the evergreens and thicken the mums, or a little dead-heading when flowers fade. But other than, that, this garden will take care of itself. I like this kind of gardening – plant the right plants in the right conditions, and all you need to do is sit back and watch them grow. 🙂

That is one of your gifts – the ability to make a self-regulating, maintenance-free garden. Another is to pick plants with awesome names – Red Davon sounds like a super villain.

Carol, you’ll have t be sure Brad posts pictures of your garden throughout the spring and summer, ok? We want to see!

Heck, I want to see, too! I got home after dark and left before sun up today so someone could have planted an IED in my front yard and I would have missed it!

This is wonderful, Brad – it will be a great welcome home gift for dear hubby, who is expected back form the seminary today after getting the SMP certificate (whoot!).

We have to have you over for a meal again soon…not as the main course either… 😉

80 or 90 bulbs?!? Wow! This is why I’m not a gardener. Way too much work. I would have planted 3.

And I’m with Lauren….please show us some updated pictures in the spring. Carol, you will surely be the envy of your neighborhood! You may even win a prize for best garden!

My favorite flower, so Carol think of me too, when they bloom. Truely one of God’s masterpieces!

Lots of variety for longer bloom. That’s a great idea!
