The day started out more normally yesterday: I had Carnation for breakfast. I brought some along with me. It is readily available here. I’m glad.
I went to school in the morning and met the other teachers. I also stopped by the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes to say hi. It was so fun to see them. I can hardly wait to start teaching. After the introductions, I sat in the principal’s office and searched for apartments and cars. The funniest entry of the day was this one:
After reading lots of listings, it was time for lunch. On the recommendation of a sixth grader, I headed to the “Minit Stop” store for a Spam musubi. It is basically Spam sushi – Spam and rice wrapped with seaweed. It was good, but mostly I could only taste the rice. I would have liked more Spam.
I did visit some apartments. Nothing to report yet. I’m trying to get to know the different areas. In between visits, I passed by gorgeous beaches. I stopped to walk on one a little:
I set out to get a car or an apartment. I accomplished neither goal. I finished the evening with Paul and his pilot brother-in-law at a sushi restaurant that had conveyor belts in it. I saw a place like this years ago in London. Paul and David were grabbing strange new sushies like crazy. I think I tried all of them. It was tasty.
Hee hee! I saw that listing, too! I’ve been searching for apartments right along with you – it’s very exciting to imagine that I’m in your shoes.
It seems to me that I remember some art video where a guy puts his camera on one of those sushi conveyor belts. It was like this one, only grittier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTxJzFrhRZs
Have a great third day!
That video is hilarious Lauren! Kudos to the person that thought of it!
Seeing your beach picture reminds me: is your Paul a Paul Snyder, because if he is, today’s LEA “Rise’n Shine” photo is from him – it’s of a beach in Maui at sunrise and it’s gorgeous. If it’s not…at least you know there are a minimum of two Pauls in Lutheran schools in Hawaii!
Hang in there on the apt. hunt – you’ll find the right hut in time. Jury still out on finding the proper transportation; I’m holding out for a dune buggy for you so you can do paved road and sand with equal ease…
My hosts’ last name is Bergmann. I don’t think there are any other LCMS churches or schools on the island, so maybe this Paul knows that Paul.
Brad, are you sure that lunch bundle was intended for human consumption….I think it’s really for tourists to feed to the sea turtles & whales.
And I would have totally checked out that hut. It might be the coolest thing ever, Gilligan!
Thanks for the beach picture! Such a beautiful sky, awesome
volcanomountain, and blue water! How nice to be surrounded every day by these views!PS. Pilot? Does this mean a helicopter ride is in your future?
He’s an airplane pilot. His route brings him here frequently. I wanted to ask him a bunch of questions about flying and turbulence and flight delays and all that, but we had just met, and I didn’t want to be a boor.
Are you loving all of the sun?
Actually, it’s very windy right now. And everyone says it’s very cool, especially at night. I am very comfortable with these temperatures.
The ripples along the beach are so peaceful-looking. Keep the photos coming!
