Congregational Support

Yesterday I went to both church services so I could meet everyone. At the first service, I was sort of installed. I’m not Called to this position, so the pastor changed some of the words. It was still very moving for me to stand in front of the congregation and say out loud that I believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of God. I took a picture before second service to show the sanctuary. Not many people were there yet. During the week, it’s the preschool room.
People dress very differently for church here than in Baltimore.

The pastor was preaching about baptism, so they put the baptismal font in the doorway. It’s a giant shell! So cool!
Do you suppose I'll ever see a shell like that when I snorkel?

I got some leis to welcome me. One was made of fuzzy red threads, and one was made of kukui nuts. I wore long pants, because that’s more dressy.
I took this picture in my room at my hosts' house after church.

At church, it was announced that I had an unfurnished apartment. After both services, there was a refreshment table in my honor. Lots of people welcomed me. Many of them asked what I needed. In all honesty, I don’t know what I need. I felt bad that I didn’t say anything specific. One couple named John and Mary (for the memory archive) just came right out and offered something – they offered a microwave!
Yay!

John brought the microwave, but not before he called and asked if I needed some plates. They gave me two plates, two bowls, and two mugs. As an afterthought, they brought a beach chair. It is perfect for watching TV!
It also adds some color to the room.

I also bought something for myself yesterday: a trash can. I needed something narrow enough to fit in the closet, and tall enough to hold a kitchen-size trash bag. I found the perfect container in the laundry section of Walmart. It’s a hamper! It was cheap, and it has holes in it to let the air out when putting a new bag in. Perfect!
The top stretches the bag to hold it tight.

Hooray for kind people and lovely church services!! I love the chair – now your living room is complete! You laughed about my mailing a sofa in the mail, but I found something. If I were filthy rich I would send you something from here. It is foam furniture that ships compressed, so you get a box with a bag inside. You open it up and *poof!* – it's furniture! (I am not filthy rich, though, so… sorry.)

I love the photos of the church. It looks very serene. Be sure to ask the preschool teacher if you can take some photos of the space set up for preschool for me. (Without kids, of course.) Maybe we could be preschool pen pals!

More trash cans should have holes in them.

A beautiful island filled with wonderful people! It doesn’t get any better than that!
And Hooray! You’re official now! Woo hoo! Let the school days begin….

And I LOVE that shell baptismal font! I have no doubt that you will discover such shells when you snorkel & gold …. grrrr.

I got a tad verklempt reading about your new church family. Now I know for sure you are in loving hands and exactly where the Lord wants you right now. I also second everything Lauren and Lloyd said. Just be sure your plastic liners never have holes in the bottom ya…

Have you found a Goodwill? That would fill up your apartment with fun and necessary things. If Martha Bickel was there, you would have a furnished apartment for under $20.00, tv included.

I love that you are just flowing with the tide, letting the Spirit guide you. Trying to get on that wave as well, here.

Maybe you already found it, but I had to look anyway.
