Cara Cara

I said earlier that I have developed an obsession with fruit since I moved here. I am especially attached to bananas, apples, and oranges. I eat at least one of each every day. As the weeks have gone by, I have tasted several varieties of apple and orange. As far as I know, there is only one variety of banana that is ever sold in grocery stores, except for plantains or small novelty bananas.

Yesterday I had the last of my current batch of oranges, and I have to say they are the most delicious oranges I have had in my entire life. They weren’t the juiciest, and I maybe wouldn’t even say they were the sweetest, but they were so flavorful. I have often smelled flowers that make my mouth water because their fragrance is so delicious. The flesh of these oranges was like that… not just a flat taste, but something complex and amazing.

They're a little bit redder than other oranges.

The label said Cara Cara. This variety has its own website HERE. Unfortunately, they are only available from December to April. My grocery store no longer has them. Good-bye, Cara Cara oranges. I will definitely look for you again next year. You are the best I ever had.

I watched the video on the Cara Cara page. That fish looks awesome. Since they have named the Cara Cara ‘The Power Orange’ and fish is so good for you, I think that meal would give you superpowers.

I knew a girl in high school named Cara. She did not look like an orange. More like a stalk of celery with glasses and a perm.

They sell Cara Cara oranges here in Baltimore. I bought a bag a few weeks ago and they were so good, I gave them to everyone I saw that week. They still have them in the stores this week. I really liked the taste and texture. I am adding some to the fruit salad I’m taking to my niece’s bridal shower this weekend.

Mmmm…..I’m going to have to track these little buggers down….and apparently I’ll have to be quick about it!

There’s alot of recipes out there that use these oranges. Let’s see, should I try the cara cara cupcakes or the cara cara brownies?!?
