Produce

I had to stop at the grocery store last night because I was almost out of food. It has been interesting to see how well I could avoid having unused food in my kitchen. I’ve done a good job actually. My refrigerator has almost no extra stuff in it. My pantry has only boxes of cereal and boxes of Kraft macaroni and cheese.

When I do stop at the grocery store, I really load up on fruit. Ever since I moved here, I have really had a fetish for fruit. And I have favorites. Every day at school I eat an apple, an orange, and a banana. Almost every night I eat an avocado. I used to have to choke down fruit, but now I love it. What happened? It’s good I suppose, since it’s healthy. But I don’t seem to look at prices when it comes to produce. Last night I paid $12 for a single artichoke and almost $13 for my oranges. I didn’t even notice it until I was home and looked at the receipt. Stupid, stupid Brad. Shop smarter, man.

The artichoke was delicious, but I don't know if it was $12 delicious.

That perfectly balances with the inexpensive pizza. Look at the whole picture. I am sure your body is thanking you for the fruits and veggies!

Kim said it. It’s pricey, but holy cow you have to be super-healthy right now! (I do agree that $12 is outrageous for an artichoke, though.)

Do you crave fruit more during regular summers? I was wondering if it was hot weather that was doing this, or your actual location?

    You…fruit… Embrace the Dadness!!

Dang…..you Hawaiian people oughta choke when you see those prices!

I know artichokes are expensive, even here….but holy cow! But so much better to spend money on healthy foods! Good for you!!

I wonder if the fruite is sweeter over there due to the awesome climate. I hope you’re not disappointed in the mainland fruit when you come back.

Can’t you just go outside and pick a banana from a tree or maybe steal one from a chicken?

    To answer Peggy and Lloyd:
I get my fruit at Safeway. Most of it comes from some other place. I think the oranges are from Florida and the apples are from Washington. Even the bananas are from somewhere else. The only consistent local fruit right now is strawberries. They are from Kula, here on Maui. They are delicious.
