May Day

Yesterday was the May Day celebration at school. It… was… AMAZING! All the classes danced a hula dance, from preschool to eighth grade. Many of the classes sang. One class even played ukulele. The kids were all varying degrees of cute and graceful and astounding. I loved it. I have seen hula dancing here before, but to see school kids do it is much more amazing than just seeing strangers.

The decorations were amazing too. Plumeria trees are blooming like crazy right now, so a bunch of people just brought in bags full of flowers, and we sprinkled them along the aisle to the stage. The smell was fantastic. If you ever get a chance to watch a May Day celebration at a school in Hawaii, do it!

This looks American Idol-worthy (not that I watch that show)! I love the background squares/posters as well – are they student products or store-bought? In my mind I was there and enjoyed it very much – thank you for the mental field trip – it was needed!

The backdrop is made of cloth. They use it every year. I don’t know who originally made it, but it’s airbrushed. Part of the celebration is that the eighth graders represent the different islands of Hawaii. The islands are different colors, so the students wear different colors (this year, it was the lining of the white dresses and the sashes around the boys’ waists). They preside over the event as the ali’i, or princes and princesses. It’s really interesting and moving.

P.S. We had snow on May Day…about 4 inches. And Today Is Cold (40ish) and Windy….Looks like it could possibly snow again. Elizabeth was supposed to have a track meet in Omaha, but it has been cancelled….Yay!!! I’ll be headed to Hannah & Daniels confirmations tomorrow….If I’m not snowed in. I have strict orders from my children not to drive in snow or ice for any reason….Fortunately, I agree with them. (^_^)

In so many of your posts I have seen Hawaiian pride. It is wonderful to witness the pride they feel in their heritage. What an education. I am sure I would have been crying. So cool.
