A Similar Fourth

I think the last time I was away from Seward for the Fourth of July was in 2003. Back then, I was working as a waiter in downtown Baltimore and couldn’t get away until after the Fourth.

This year, I was in Baltimore for the Fourth because I’m still making house restoration arrangements and because I’m delaying my arrival in Nebraska so I can celebrate my mom and dad’s 50th anniversary at the end of July.

In Seward, my day would have started at a pancake breakfast. In Baltimore, I went to the Overlea Diner. I didn’t have breakfast, but I did sit next to a table with nine older ladies who were all dressed in their best Fourth of July shirts and earrings. It was great!

I don't like home fries, so I got tomatoes.

In Seward, I would have gone to the square and pressed my way through the crowds and eaten delicious fair food. In Baltimore, I went to the mall. The crowds weren’t as thick there, but it was still fun to people-watch. I also had some frozen yogurt with sprinkles. Mmm…

In Seward, I would have watched a parade complete with Czech queens. In Baltimore, I went for a walk near my apartment. I didn’t see any Czech queens, but I did see a police car.

In Seward, I would have ended the night watching fireworks at Plum Creek Park. In Baltimore, I watched fireworks on TV. It was the New York fireworks. It was cool, but I missed smelling the gunpowder smoke and hearing all the ooo’s and ahhh’s.

They were nice.

They were nice.

Your absence was duly noted by many. 🙁 I’m glad you found some sorry substitutions, though! You missed eating a giant barbeque sandwich while listening to five men in powdered wigs and short pants sing. Can’t get that at the mall.

Yea…a Baltimore County police car is somehow comparable to a Czech queen parade…I get it… not really.

Meanwhile, we huddled indoors last night while some nutty neighbor on Hamilton Avenue set off every explosive known to man, legal or illegal in this area. Hokey smoke, Bullwinkle – and I mean that literally. Good thing all furry residents were indoors as well. In fact, as one point Riley went into the window sill, looked out, cowered, and slunk away – it was almost fingeron911 level. People can act crazy on holidays; this morning you’d never know that happened. (‘Course, I have not been in my backyard to collect firecracker debris yet either..)

You were definitely missed in Seward!

In Knoxville, it was sprinkling. We watched the fireworks show from the high up parking lot of the Kerbela Shrine Temple. Ya Hoo!!
Today we will spend the day in the Smoky Mountains. Tomorrow we spend the day celebrating our post-poned 4th at Mark and Debbie’s house. Sunday it’s church and we see many friends and Ye Ole’ Steak House for dinner with Dr. Roy Hall, and Monday we are Seward bound…..Ye Hah!!

    1. Yay for the Overlea Diner! I told you they had interesting older people there! That bacon looks familiar:)
    2. I thought you were going to the Inner Harbor or else I would have insisted that you come to my house – poop:(
    3. I caught some of the NY fireworks on TV – nothing can compare to those!

Youdidn’t have breakfast? Am I seeing bacon, OJ, & bisquits with gravy or creamed chipped beef? If that’s a burger & fries….I guess I do need glasses afterall.

I’m glad you had a nice 4th even though you weren’t in Seward…4th of July capitol of the country!

Oops. I meant to say: I didn’t have pancakes. Those are biscuits with sausage gravy. It was good.

I remember seeing the fireworks on Federal Hill in Baltimore when I lived there 20 years ago. They were spectacular. And I don’t even like fireworks!
