Yesterday in History

In my homeroom each morning, I do “This Day in History”. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discuss all kinds of topics. Wednesday was the birthday of Paul Dukas, so I played a bit of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” for my students. It was also the anniversary of the announcement of the founding of The People’s Republic of China, so I talked about the current protests in Hong Kong.

I often get to talk about pop culture, which is really fun. I love working with kids because they often haven’t heard of really great things and I get to be the one to introduce them. Yesterday was Bud Abbot’s birthday – of Abbot and Costello. None of the kids had heard of “Who’s on First”. I got to play it for them for the first time ever. They loved it!

This version is really bad picture quality, but I like the delivery. Plus, Lou Costello is wearing a jersey that says “PU”. Ha!

I also tried to show them the Jimmy Fallon version. Unfortunately, the video froze right when Jerry Seinfeld comes out, so the kids didn’t get to see that it ends a little differently.

Ha! I love the Seinfeld version! He can do no wrong in my eyes.

How awesome that you are the one that brings Fun Knowledge to the kiddos. Thanks to you, they are going to win some obscure trivia contests!

I had not seen that second version before. I was moved. Oh, and the St. Louis team plays tonight.

That’s my FAVORITE bit!! My dad introduced me to it as a kid & I’ve been cracking up over it ever since. I don’t know…..third base!

And although I LOVE Fallon (btw: it may have been a mistake to do The Tonight Show in NY Jimmy…..somehow, someway I’m coming for you….I will get in to meet you….just ask AC about my determination) , Crystal, & Seinfeld….nobody can do it like Bud & Lou!!

It made me smile to know that the “This Day in History” segment (which, BTW, launched my “Happy Birthday Scientist” daily reports – but I digress) is back. And like your Aunt Bev, I had never seen the Late Night version – great visual of the frustration in miscommunication (and good belly laughs along the way). What a gift you are to those students each day – thanking God for putting you back in the classroom.
