In computer class, I’ve often been helping the younger kids type what they want into PowerPoint slides. Sometimes they say they want to type down on the next line, but they can’t make the cursor go there. I tell them that all they have to do is push the “Return” key, and I start to point at it.
Then I notice there IS no “Return” key. It’s called “Enter”. I always laugh and say: “Oh, that’s a different word for it. Press the ‘Enter’ key.”
The internet tells me that some keyboards say “Return”, but the word “Enter” is slowly gaining ground as the preferred term.
I have a wireless Apple keyboard. Mine says ‘return’ in larger letters at the bottom, but the top right corner has ‘enter’ in smaller letters.
Big fan of ‘return’. Also wish it came with a dinging sound.
I did that same thing with my 3rd graders the other day.
There should be some software that you can install to make any keyboard to make a typewriter keyboard sound when you hit that key. (I was going to try to write out the sound instead of saying, “that typewriter sound”, but I couldn’t figure it out)
Now I’m trying to make that noise with my mouth. Good thing I’m alone in my classroom right now.
How about:
sssssshhhk… ding!
or
zzzzzzzz… ka-Chunk… ding!
Ooo….I think you came up with some good spelling for the sound. Except I think you have it backwards….wouldn’t the ding come 1st, then the ssshhhhk (as you return the cartridge)???
Oops! You’re right. The “ding” should be first. It’s been a while since I used a typewriter. I still can hear the voice of my typing teacher from high school: “ff space. gg space. dd space…”
I think Tom Hanks came up with an app that makes typewriter noises when you text

Would that be good enough? 😉
Crazy how we all love the sound of a good ‘ol fashioned manual typewriter:

Ha! I love that piece!
That was hilarious!
Huh. My ipad button is ‘return’.
(^_^) To ALL Of You!!!! Blessings & Love, Aunt Bev 🙂
P.S. Do ANY of you remember the “ding’ from a typewriter “return”????
Just looked at my keyboard and it says Enter – never noticed that before.
