Rose Recovery

My hellebores usually have leaves that last all winter, but we’ve had some record-breaking lows this year, and almost all the leaves are dead. Now that we’ve had some warmer days, the plants are perking up. Clusters of new leaves are growing from the center of the plants, and even more exciting, they are blooming! Good thing they didn’t wait a couple of weeks, otherwise they would have missed the opportunity to live up to their common name: lenten roses.

The petals feel like leather.

How very like you to find the beauty in the cold and dead of winter. Those are lovely! Take that, freezing weather!

    That’s a lot of pressure.

Heh. Winters here are so mild, they usually bloom before Lent. This year, it worked out just right.
