Picking Sides

Yesterday I was texting with Karla and using Siri to listen to and write the texts. Karla was curious about how Siri would say certain words. She tested lol. You can either say the letters “el-oh-el”, or you can say it like a word “laul”. Siri said the letters.

Siri Lol

I was curious about the word “gif”, which is a word for a kind of picture on the internet. There is a strong debate about whether the G is soft or hard. Do you pronounce the word like “gift” without the t, or do you pronounce it like jif? At first, the results were inconclusive, but when Karla repeated the experiment, the results were confirmed.

Siri Gif

Siri says a soft G. I’m a little surprised. I’m a hard G person myself, so it seems like everyone else should be too.

Amazingly, the news last night had a spot on the woman who actually did/does Siri’s voice, sharing the other ways we may also know her. I don’t want to miss anything the article shared, so y’all can check it out for yourselves: http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/04/tech/mobile/bennett-siri-iphone-voice/

I’ve heard that the argument is that since it’s for graphics interchange format, it should be a hard g. Otherwise it should be jraphics, which sounds like a zoo exercise program.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to tell you that Brad edited our conversation. For a while I was sending curse words so we could find out if Siri would say them. Science! Yay!

Yeah, you can only say “jif” if you also “japhics”.

    I say juraphics.

I’ve also said jif for a while now because of Wilhite.
