I’m teaching fourth grade social studies this year. Did I say that already? I don’t mean to repeat myself. Anyway, yesterday we were talking about inset maps in class. I had a few examples from the internet. It gave me a chance to talk about other countries and other languages and how maps sometimes color things in different ways. Lots of incidental learning went on.
My favorite map was the following:
I asked them if they knew where the Thames river is. They didn’t. I told them, and then said I liked this map because of the street name in the inset. I asked them if they knew who lived there. One of the girls started singing the song, and soon most of the rest of the class was singing along.
Ha! They will remember that forever! Thanks for the link – I didn’t know the song was about English muffins, not the sweet kind.
Our neighbors are the Durres, and I often want to break into song when saying ‘Hello’. 🙂
Whew! I’m glad that was the song – I was afraid someone had written a tune with “Aldwych” in it…
Nice incidental learning there, sir!!
…and BTW, who needs maps anymore??!!! Doesn’t everyone use their GPS?!?!
–she who still buys a Rand McNally Road Atlas and owns absolutely nothing witha GPS on it.
What song are you talking about? I was referring to this one:
Aldwych You a Merry Christmas,
Aldwych You a Merry Christmas,
Aldwych You a Merry Christmas,
And a merrye newe year!
