Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Color Above and Below

About a month ago, I got some bushes to plant alongside my new porch. My old bushes were barberry plants. They had nice maroon leaves, but they also had thorns. Ack! My new bushes are fringe flower plants. Not only do they have nice maroon leaves, they also have beautiful fuchsia blooms. AND they don’t have thorns. Nice!

Yesterday, I finally planted them. It was important to get them in the ground before a hard frost. That way, their roots will have time to grow before the shock of freezing temperatures, and they will be protected from winter die-back. I mulched them heavily.

I adjusted them after this picture so they were spaced and centered correctly.

As I was pulling the bushes out of the pots to plant them, I was shocked at how brightly colored their roots were. They were gorgeous!

So pink!

So pink!

It made me think of the old barberry bushes. When we tore them out this past summer, we noticed how bright yellow their roots were. While I was thinking about it and digging around, I hit some roots. Awesome! Now I could show a picture of those as well:

So yellow!

So yellow!

I think this is the last gardening I will do for the season. I do have some other plants in pots that I bought on clearance, but I think they will just have to take their chances with the cold. Daylight time is scarcer and scarcer.

Why are the roots so brightly colored? Is it to entertain the people of the underworld? There can be no other explanation.

Passen Sie auf – wir wissen, was kommt aus Hanfsamen … noch nicht legal in jedem Staat. 😉

I deleted the comment in German that said something about growing marijuana. It was spam, and if you leave comments like that, the robots notice and post more.
