The Trout

I was home almost all day yesterday. I actually did a lot of organizing and cleaning. It felt good.

One of the things I did was wash clothes. My apartment has a new stacked washer and dryer. I like using them.

They do have a quirk though: when the load of laundry is finished in either the washer or dryer, it plays a tune – a looong tune. It’s almost comical how long it lasts.

I went on the internet to find out what it was, and was pleasantly surprised to find out it’s a song written by Franz Schubert called “The Trout”. We’re studying the Romantic Period in Music History class! Ha! I played these two videos for my students:

Also interesting is that this song appears in one of the Sherlock Holmes movies.

Ha! I think that is adorable. Surly there is a way to turn that off?

Ours plays the same thing. The first time we heard the original tune on NPR, we were shocked! It’s a REAL song!!!! We like to harmonize the last few phrases of it.

Samsung must think we all need a little bit of culture.

Hehe… There are a few recordings of washers and dryers on Youtube playing this song. In one version, the husband and wife dance to the music.

So, let me get this straight: a South Korean company chose an old German piece nobody knew by a dead composer to tell its customers their laundry is finished?!

Actually…if we ever get the stacking W & D Thurman wants upstairs (to reduce the need to use the basement stairs so often) I’ll want a Samsung as well now.

Oh my gosh, my washer AND dryer play a song too!!! It’s an LG brand. The song is not as long. How funny!!!!!!!!!! I’ll have to find out if it’s anything.
